Reviews:

A Wednesday night in Point Pleasant NJ and its not even summer yet …so who would of ever guessed there was quality entertainment to be had in a nice intimate venue? Well this past Wednesday the stars aligned and I went to Uncle Vinnies comedy club to catch one of Jim Florentines fledgling performances of his new “One Man Show”. Everyone knows Jim as the guy who does upper-deckers, makes us all cheer along when he screws with telemarketers or makes us cring when he does hidden camera videos along with his cast of Creeps. You may also know him as part of the “Crank Yankers” crew or as one of the hosts on VH1 Classics “That Metal Show”. So it would be expected that one would be ready for a night of dick jokes and other raunchy humor but that’s not what the “One Man Show” is about at all. I knew it wasn’t going to be straight stand-up comedy as the preview stated “you will laugh, you will cry….” But it was even much more than that. In the course of about an hour Jim elicted a full range of emotions as he went through his life from his strict catholic upbringing through his formative years and all the way up to the present day. There was laughter and crying as advertised, but there were also people getting pissed off, people reflecting on their lives and some wondering where the line between right and wrong really is. And all of this wasn’t just occurring in the crowd, all of those emotions were happening right up on the stage as well. Jim took us on an emotional roller-coaster ride as he delved into his life completely from the highs to the lowest of lows. But unlike the roller coaster which always ends up stopping at a low point Jim has managed to end up at a high point after all that he has been though. It’s a compelling story that would give anyone hope that things can turn out well in the end if you just keep trying to do the right thing.

The show chronicles his life from his beginnings of a young man in East Coast suburbia to having a personal epiphany following the aftermath of emotional turmoil. Jim starts by doing his special brand of edgy and sometimes raunchy and lewd stand up which he has become known for. However, the show becomes far more personal than you might expect. He brings you along on a journey of his life, by not only his words, but visually as well. The show is emotional, candid, and thought provoking. He cleverly spins real life tales, and combines them with humor and a slide show of pictures from the past. Jim’s show my even make you examine your own life as you compare his struggles and triumphs with your own. The show is courageous in the sense that he reveals experiences most of us would keep private or at least save for a “tell all” book at a ripe old age. You also get the indication this show may in fact be therapy for Jim, but as you listen to the stories, the funny and even the serious ones, you understand why life is worth living whether your young or old.

If you have seen Jim’s stand up shows in the past, you will be amazed at his incredible real life stories. If you’ve never seen or heard of Jim Florentine, I can guarantee you become a new fan for years to come, because I sure he’ll have plenty of new stories to share with us in the future.

Saw Jim Florentine’s One Man Show at Uncle Vinnies in Point Pleasant last wed night. I didnt know what to expect because I knew it wasnt his regular stand up. This is a show about his life and what has brought him to the good place where he is today. We all had the best time, the show is hysterical ,touching and tragic. I honestly had all of these emotions throughout the show but most of all laughed alot! Jim was wonderful and I cant wait to see the show when he brings it to NYC. Loved it!!!!!!! Go See Him!
